A shortage of rear headroom makes the backseat better suited to small folks or kids in booster seats. The Juke's cargo area offers a paltry 10 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 36 cubic feet with those seatbacks folded down.

A compact hatchback like a Mazda 3 or Volkswagen Golf is actually better, while the Kia Soul's cargo capacity numbers are 19 and 61 cubic feet, respectively.

Doing so could save you hundreds or thousands of dollars. Edmunds also provides consumer-driven dealership sales and service reviews to help you make informed decisions about what cars to buy and where to buy them.

After going to Jeep and they not being willing to come even close to my price range, I decided to take a look at the Nissan Juke.

I was sceptical because it looks like an insect and rather small inside but when I walked into the dealership there is was in the color I loved fully loaded so I drove it and bought it.

We've now had 2 good snow storms and last night I really tested my Juke in the snow. Drove on one of the worst mountainess roads in the middle of a snow storm and it being 16 degrees.

As nervous as I was my Juke didn't skip a beat, not one time did it slide, loose grip or anything. I drove for 4 hours and nothing, drove perfectly in AWD.

However, if you need space for adults and cargo-carrying capability, then you'd be better served by traditional hatchback or wagon," we said in our Nissan Juke SL AWD First Test.

Once you get behind the wheel and drive, though, all the thoughts of impracticality and polarizing looks magically disappear, replaced by the fun-to-drive nature and engaging on-road performance.

A bigger cargo area would go a ways toward boosting this model's appeal, but we'll just have to be happy with a zippy model that sips fuel despite its strong performance numbers.

Moving up to the SV variant adds premium cloth upholstery, a moonroof, the I-CON interface, which integrates the climate and drive mode controls into one set of buttons with a small screen, satellite radio, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and automatic temperature control.

The Juke Nismo comes with the same standard tech features as the SL and adds a chrome exhaust, red side mirror caps, a Nismo aero kit, inch alloy wheels, a Nismo-tuned steering system, Nismo-tuned suspension and chassis, and sport seats.

Moving up to the Nismo RS adds Recaro front bucket seats, red brake calipers, a Nismo-tuned exhaust system, and more aggressive versions of the Nismo-tuned suspension chassis, and power steering system.

In a First Test review, we noted that the Juke excels at being fun to drive thanks to its engaging handling and strong turbo-four.

However, everything else is sacrificed because of its polarizing styling, which cuts into interior space. Additionally, material quality isn't very impressive due to the excessive amounts of hard plastics in the cabin.

Nismo versions of the Juke are no better as we noted in a Juke Nismo RS First Test review because it's nearly impossible to get comfortable in the car due to the lack of seat adjustability and a steering wheel that doesn't telescope.

I have run sport mode briefly, basically it kicks up the CVT 1, RPM's and you get a lot more torque, but the gas bill will skyrocket!

I am getting somewhere around 30 mpg which is great. The seats are firm as is the ride, the tires are great.

I'm single and not concerned the back seat is cramped so is the new Jeep Renegade's, I picked to Juke over that for performance reasons.

All in all I am happy. I run premium gas, it does a better job and I am not concerend about the extra expense at 30 mpg. I drive miles a day, and this great car makes it easy.

Passing on the interstate is never an issue, just tap that gas peddle and she zooms. The Juke is not for tall or large in stature people though, it fits me perfect but I am 4'10 , my son had a hard time getting in She does amazing in the Colorado rain and snow, driving in the mountains is easier with fantastic handling and maneuverability.

Storage is limited, but I added my own, some of the knobs and trim are cheaply made, but with just me in it, I won't have a problem.

I absolutely love this zippy fun AWD crossover, perfect for a commuter! The car drives good, and it is fun to drive as well. At 10 months and miles, the intake manifold had to be replaced at no cost other than the toll cost of the loaner provided by the dealer ; it took several trips to the dealer to determine what the problem was, and about 7 days to get the whole thing resolved.

The interior layout is a mixed bag with funky colors and fabrics, with hard plastics and some bad textures in places.

Overall, the Juke's fun unconventional approach helps us forget some of the eccentricities—but not entirely. The Juke's age starts to show in its crash-test scores, which are now relatively poor.

Federal testers have given the Juke a four-star overall score with a worrying three-star score in frontal crash protection.

Nissan made standard a rearview camera, and makes available a surround-view camera system that helps improve safety, although outward visibility isn't as poor as you might expect from such a stylish car.

They come with inch wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless ignition, a rearview camera, power windows and locks, air conditioning, and 5.

For , Nissan made standard its cold-weather package in SV and SL trims, which includes heated front seats and heated outside mirrors.

Nismo and Nismo RS models add sportier buckets and contrast stitching, although there are relatively few options from the Nissan factory for the Juke.

The Nissan Juke is still fresh, even though the look is relatively aged. The Juke marries amped-up rally racer with some of the utility and styling of today's small crossovers.

It's futuristic—and polarizing—and has gained a following because of its unique look. The Juke is all hips with bulges, swells, and angles around the car.

The tall fenders rise from the low-mounted headlights, blade-like turn signals, and aggressive grille. The sloping roofline gives the Juke a coupe-like profile at the rear passengers' expense and the wide rear haunches complete the sporty exterior design with hidden rear door handles.

It's a good exterior, but only an average interior. We give a 6 out of 10 for style. Inside, the Juke is a mixed composition of motorcycle-inspired gauges and looks, with a changing cloth fabric for seats and colorful inserts.

Its look certainly isn't ordinary, and it may not be for some peoples' tastes. Then again, that's probably what Nissan's designers were going for anyway.

Nissan also offers a Juke Color Studio program that gives buyers more ways to customize their vehicles, with bright colors for the wheels, rear spoiler, door handles, headlamp trim, side sills, and fascia trim.

These trims are sold individually, at the dealership, but can be included in vehicle financing. Part playful, part menacing, and part odd duck, the Nissan Juke is at its best when it's considered as a sporty subcompact with a lift.

It's a stronger performer than others in its class, although the Juke isn't as mature or refined. Despite its relatively tall stature, the Juke darts and daggers in and out of corners with especially quick and sharp steering.

That's worth a point over the baseline rating in our opinion, and the Juke just barely misses out on another point for its engine lineup. The Juke earns a 6 out of 10 on our performance scale.

The base engine is a horsepower 1. Those cars can be equipped with either front- or all-wheel drive, but a continuously variable automatic transmission is the only option for You'd think this powertrain would yield a quick little urban runabout, yet it feels oddly ponderous in traffic—and rather noisy when you do want to extract all the available performance out of the powertrain.

Push it hard, however, and it is quicker than the competition, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in about seven seconds. The all-wheel-drive system complements the Juke's on-road behavior more than it adds off-road capability.

It's probably barely suited to a steep driveway covered in snow, and the all-wheel-drive system is best thought of as a performance option for street use, bringing with it independent rear suspension instead of the front-drive model's torsion-beam rear.

That would make it the enthusiast's choice despite the added weight, complexity, and cost—except that it means you can't get the 6-speed manual transmission at all, as it's only available in front-drive Jukes.

All versions of the Juke come with adaptive steering and transmission modes designed to control the crossover's behavior.

The Eco mode feels intentionally sluggish, to the degree that it interferes with smoothness we tended to over-press the accelerator to get the desired acceleration, then had to back off, repeatedly.

Normal mode is a good midpoint for drivability, while Sport mode actually feels sporty—raising the idle speed, reducing turbo lag, and sharpening the steering.

But as we've noted in repeated drives of the Juke, it cuts even more into this model's already lackluster fuel economy.

Juke Nismo RS models get added punch under the hood from the turbochargers, up to hp and pound-feet of torque all-wheel drive models make hp.

Opting for the Juke Nismo models add nearly other revised components, including exclusive lightweight alloy wheels, a specially tuned suspension, more downforce, and more aggressively bolstered sport seats.

It's also the only way to get a 6-speed manual transmission in a Juke anymore—and it's only available with front-wheel drive. Despite the existence of a third-pedal model, we still say the all-wheel-drive version is the enthusiast's pick, especially with those models' independent rear suspension.

Its cargo space isn't all that impressive for a hatchback, nor is its ability to seat five adults in a cramped back seat. Based on those shortcomings, the Juke earns a less-than-practical 2 out of 10 on our comfort scale.

The interior layout is a little mixed: the shiny, color-shifting seat upholstery looks a little cartoonish, but still cool; the hard plastics and buttons are unmistakably bargain basement.

Altogether everything fits—just not well enough to make us forget that the Juke is built with a budget mission in mind. The Juke is best experienced from the front seats, where visibility and space is generally good.

Rear-seat passengers are asked to make do with The second row is a little taller than we think it needs to be, which eats into available head room for rear seat passengers, opt for a sunroof and that head space diminishes further.

Cargo room is limited to just Fold down the rear seats and that space opens up to The Nissan Juke is now firmly behind the set in crash-test scores, an indicator of its relatively old structure.

Federal testers haven't yet finalized scores for , but based on the similarities from 's version, we can carry over those scores this year.

The Juke received a four-star overall score with a worrying and relatively rare three-star score for frontal crash protection. The IIHS gave the Juke top "Good" scores in most tests, except the small-overlap front crash test, where it netted another worrying "Poor" rating.

Those low scores are how we arrived at a low 2 out of 10 for safety in our ratings. Standard safety equipment includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, a rearview camera, and tire-pressure monitors.

Standard on the SL and optional on the SV is a useful and potentially mishap-preventing surround-view camera system.

Outward visibility in the Juke is surprisingly good, despite the short side windows and thick rear pillars. The Nissan Juke is offered in the same trim levels as last year, with heated seats and outside mirrors as standard equipment for SV trims and higher, which is new for this year.

All-wheel drive is available on all trims, however only front-drive models can be fitted with a manual transmission. That's good base equipment and a good infotainment system as well.

It earns a 7 out of 10 on our features scale. Stepping up to the SV model adds a few more creature comforts, such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power moonroof, upgraded cloth upholstery, satellite radio, and automatic climate control.

The top model in the standard Juke lineup, the SL, adds fog lamps, perforated leather upholstery, a Rockford Fosgate six-speaker audio system, and an upgraded 5.

Jumping up to the Nismo model adds sport bucket front seats, sportier trim pieces a different shift knob and door panels, for instance , red contrast stitching, inch wheels.

The lone factory option from Nissan is a tech package available on SV trims that adds an upgraded stereo, bigger infotainment system, and a surround-view camera system.
